QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOU BOOK your DJ/Entertainment for your wedding, birthday, Anniversary, civil partnership, corporate entertainment or any other function or event.

DJs and entertainers in the industry largly vary. You have the good, the bad and the ugly. This page should help you choose the right professional for your function or event by asking some of the important questions.

Don't forget it is your day, you are in charge and what people remember about your function or event is down to you . Here are a few essentials you need to know and ask to evaluate your potential choices.   

Things you should be asking any potential DJ/Entertainer:  

Is a written contract provided?

Any DJ/entertainer should provide you with a written agreement including timings, location and total costs (not the inital cost before extra and travel are included).  

Do you know proper etiquette and procedure for my party?

A good DJ/Entertainer will have years of experience in running the entertainment for a whole variety of functions and events.  

Are you reliable?

This is one of the most crucial requirements for your function and event; your entertainer should be punctual, and responsible. DJ's who actively participate in DJ Associations and Forums are generally keen to improve their professionalism and learn new skills, this also provides backup resources should any problem arise.  

Do you use professional equipment?

A professional DJ/Entertainer will use professional equipment that is robust, reliable, regularly serviced and very good quality. This also includes transport.  

Do you have any form of backup?

Even the best, most expensive professional equipment can fail, so as to minimize this, your DJ/Entertainer should carry enough backup equipment to be able to continue his work with the minimum amount of issues should a problem arrise.  

Are you insured?

Every DJ/entertainer should be able to produce a certificate of Public Liability Indemnity insurance (otherwise known as PLI) on demand. Most venue management may require to see this in advance of your function or event.  

Can we request music selections?

A DJ/Entertainer should be prepared to listen to your needs and requests to play appropriate music for their party and encorage you to do so. It is important that your guests enjoy the music. Your DJ/entertainer should have a comprehensive, legal collection of music at his disposal. If a DJ/entertainer uses a laptop or computer based system you should ask how music is aquired. As generally Ilegally obtained music is of a poor quality and not suitable for performance use.  

Will you be suitably dressed?

Your entertainer should be presentable and be dressed to suit your funciton / event. If you are holding a formal evening function or event, make sure the DJ/entertainer can blend in with your guests with suitable clothing - smart, casual, suit or even black tie. If your evening party is going to be themed or more relaxed, make sure you let the DJ know what you expect him to wear for the performance. Whilst setting up and dismantlingyour DJ/ entertainer may need to be in less smart clothing, ensuring that at the start the main clothing is clean and presentable.  

Costs.  

The cost of a DJ/entertainer can vary greatly throught the UK being generally anywhere between £80 and £800 for an evening.  The cheapest DJ will seldom be the best choice, and numerous sources have highlighted the fact that in hindsight, many function and event organisers regret having booked cheaper entertainment and have been very disapointed at the lack of wow factor.  Typically for a function or event we will normally invest 10 to 30 hours preparation work in addition to the hours performing at your function or event.  This ensures we get to know every detail of your function or event which minimises problems on the day itself.
